This fasttrack project, one of PCL’s Top 20 of the 20th Century, began with detailed engineering and early-stage constructability reports. Once mobilized, PCL was quick to assemble and set 30 piperack/process modules; over 300 pieces of equipment; 3,000 tonnes of steel erection; 220,000 diameter inches of pipe, 9,300 pipe spools; and 60,000 feet of cable.
Partnered with Dow Chemical Canada Inc. and various subcontractors, PCL monitored the project schedule closely to accommodate a 12-month overlap of the engineering and construction phases. As a result, field construction was 70 percent complete when the final detailed engineering was released, and the entire project was built 10 months faster than any equivalent project in the client’s history. The fasttrack schedule had no effect at all on PCL’s safety performance, which was excellent from start to finish.
Operating at 100% capacity within one month of construction completion, the Poly Train facility was recognized for outstanding schedule and costing by Dow Chemical's auditor.
