The Rabbit Hill Overpass was a continuation of Alberta Transportation’s efforts to develop the Edmonton Ring Road into a fully functioning ring road with no cross-traffic interruptions. As the general contractor, PCL was responsible for the construction of a two-span bridge over Anthony Henday Drive. The bridge was a conventional steel girder with a concrete deck grade separation structure, and was the widest bridge deck poured in Alberta to date. The project also included construction of about two kilometers of urban roadway, connecting to the existing city streets.
A traffic accommodation plan was required as the bridge was constructed over an active, high volume, four-lane divided highway. Two crossover medians on either side of the central pier allowed traffic to be re-routed during the night girder erections and concrete deck placement. By using in-house engineers to provide an efficient and cost-effective design for the formwork systems, PCL completed the project on time and under budget.
