The Saint Vincent Hospital Addition and Renovation project consisted of 218,000 square feet of renovations and 64,000 square feet of expansion to this aging facility in downtown Ottawa. The six-phase project called for a new atrium, a five-story addition, and extensive upgrades to the existing facility. In renovating the original structure, which was built in various stages dating back to the 1930s, great care had to be taken not to damage the exterior.
The intricacies of constructing within an operational hospital made for a significant challenge. The hospital had to maintain 348 beds at all times, which required the PCL team to execute careful planning and precise scheduling. This requirement drove the construction approach, with time built in between phases for moving and reorganization. As well, even with intense construction, it was essential to keep the heating and electrical system functional at all times, and to maintain life-safety systems and fire exits.
