This project called for renovations to basement-level Class 100-Class 10,000 cleanrooms at UCLA. The project also includes the addition of interstitial catwalks and access panels for mechanical equipment.
PCL had a tall order to fill in completing this renovation. The team had to perform construction activities in and around certified and functional Class 100, 1,000, and 10,000 cleanrooms. After construction, recertification of each cleanroom was required to ensure the integrity of the environment. PCL’s plan to ensure high standards were met included committing subcontractors to attend cleanroom training, enforcing weekly air particulate testing and monitoring, and dedicating quality control staff to the project. The outcome was that all the Class 100 cleanrooms maintained their certification; the balance actually exceeded superior Class 1,000 status, even though this was not required.
