The University of Central Florida (UCF) Downtown campus is a 15-acre, 21st-century learning environment in the heart of downtown Orlando and serves as a world-class urban campus for digital media communication, public service and health-related programs. PCL served as the construction manager for the UCF Downtown Parking Garage, a 580-space, four-story garage that includes license plate recognition technology, security cameras, real-time space counts by floor and electric charging stations. The ground floor includes approximately 25,000 square feet of space for University-operated retail, campus services and storage space for campus supplies.
Working with higher-education clients throughout North America, PCL understands the importance of adhering to university building codes. In acting as a client advocate, however, PCL will propose deviations from building codes that may better serve the university. While building the UCF Downtown Garage, PCL’s contract documents called for 25-foot-tall light poles with LED lights to be installed on the garage’s top deck, in conflict with the university’s building codes, which designate hinged light poles with halogen bulbs. PCL supported the client by encouraging the approval of the less expensive, lower-maintenance aluminum light poles with energy-efficient LED lights. With PCL’s encouragement, the university accepted the proposed alternatives and recognized the added value for the project.
