The West Palm Beach Air Traffic Control Tower project consists of a 240-foot air traffic control tower; a single-story, 9,000-square foot base building; and all associated site work. The tower is constructed of structural precast concrete, and the base building of a steel frame with precast concrete walls. Site work included a parking lot, sidewalks, landscaping, and a security system.
To facilitate faster, safer, and more precise erecting of the structural steel cab onto the top of the tower, PCL installed the cab on the ground and erected the entire structure in one piece. The team also provided the client with double-height precast wall panels on the tower section, which permitted fewer joints and decreases the chance of water intrusion. For better use of space, PCL—along with the electrical and mechanical trade contractors—reconfigured the tower’s electrical and mechanical rooms to allow for a cleaner installation and easier access.
