PCL Construction understands that a convention center is more than a space for business meetings. Convention centers offer communities a place to congregate, create revenue for municipalities, and add life to urban centers. Convention centers can raise the prestige of a city by providing a venue for high-profile entertainment and attractions. They’re a shared space where idea generators, industry leaders, and community members gather for thought-provoking sessions, conferences, and parties.

Memories in the Making
PCL offers clients a unique body of expertise as well the promise of delivering a top-quality product in the convention center market. “While no two buildings will ever be the same, our knowledge base and preconstruction techniques remain the same,” said Shaun Yancey, president and COO, US Operations. “PCL has been fortunate to build some of the most well-known and beautifully designed facilities in the world, and it’s our intention to set the standard of excellence high across our industry.”
Some notable facilities PCL has helped build include the Hawaii Convention Center, voted the most beautiful convention center in the world by the International Association of Exhibition and Events; the Vancouver Convention Center West which boasts the largest green roof in the world; the Ottawa Convention Centre, which surpassed its original LEED Silver certification target and achieved LEED Gold; the Las Vegas Convention Center South Hall, encompassing over 1.3 million square feet as well as four bridges over Desert Inn Road; and the Orange County Convention Center, ranked by Tradeshow Week as one of the nation’s top convention facilities.
Committed to Building the Best
PCL has a proud history of helping bring iconic buildings to communities. PCL’s delivery of the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) project in Central Florida is an example. The OCCC is the primary public convention center for the Central Florida region and currently the second-largest convention center in the United States. OCCC chose PCL to renovate and expand the exhibition space, increase the number of meeting rooms, and enhance the center’s public areas. Project teams were able to limit disruption to the center’s ongoing operations by establishing an excellent rapport and building relationships with County and convention center operations staff, and by communicating an effective phasing plan throughout the long-span construction project.
“PCL ‘s fine work is showcased in many areas of the OCCC, and we are proud to point out what they have done throughout our campus,” said Kathy Canning, executive director of the OCCC. “The PCL crew has done an outstanding job of going out of their way for our clients. The attention to detail they give to noise level, cleanup, and being courteous as a whole is very reassuring.”
Whether it be tight urban sites, noise ordinances, environmental barriers, bridging roads and freeways, or tight schedules, PCL's staff has the requisite knowledge and expertise to overcome these challenges, providing risk mitigation and ensuring project success. Success in the convention center market is attributable to PCL's years of experience with long-span, general contractor/construction management convention center construction, and virtual construction expertise, as well as the collaborative nature of the organization, working as an integrated team player. “PCL is well-versed in integrated delivery models where project teams collaborate, bringing interested parties together to reduce waste and optimize efficiencies throughout all phases of a project,” said Yancey.
