RAMON C. CORTINES SCHOOL OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS - ARCHITECTURAL GENIUS (Pictured Above)

The Los Angeles–based Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts is both a public high school and an architectural wonder. This top secondary school in the Los Angeles Unified School District hosts a conical library space, soaring concert hall, outdoor amphitheater, photography and broadcast studios, multiple sciences and computer labs, specialized spaces equipped for art, music and theater classes and dance studios. Virtual design and construction methods were used to coordinate structural steel, curtain wall and cladding to create this aesthetically modern school, with striking curved walls, curtain wall, stainless steel exterior panels and quirky-yet-cool asymmetrical features.

TELUS CENTRE FOR PERFORMANCE AND LEARNING AT THE ROYAL CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC - CULTURAL HUB

The TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning is expertly tied into the historical McMaster Hall in downtown Toronto, Ontario. It is a premier music teaching and performance venue that houses a PCL-constructed floating concert hall, rehearsal hall, acoustically built teaching studios and a music technology lab. One of the highlights of this stunning building is the glass-enclosed central atrium, an architecturally stimulating and relaxed space that students, faculty and staff can enjoy.

SULLIVAN CENTER FOR INNOVATION AND LEADERSHIP AT IOLANI SCHOOL - LEARNING IN PARADISE 

 

PCL built the Sullivan Center for Innovation and Leadership as a flagship for Honolulu’s Iolani School. This 40,000-square-foot, four-story learning paradise integrates sustainable design and is dedicated to citizenship, applied technology, scientific discovery and digital communication. The PCL team even got a little help building the project from the students themselves. Focusing on 21st-century learning skills, the Sullivan Center includes a robotics lab, flexible project spaces, collaboration classrooms, a digital media lab, a rooftop garden and a research lab. 

EDMONTON CLINIC HEALTH ACADEMY AT UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA - TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE 

 

Edmonton Clinic Health Academy is a LEED® Silver, 570,000-square-foot teaching, research and administration facility for the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medical Sciences. Working in tandem with the industry-leading Kaye Edmonton Clinic (another PCL project), Edmonton Clinic Health Academy integrates teams of health science researchers in a state-of-the-art ambulatory care facility. The three lower levels of the clinic house teaching and research facilities, including four lecture theaters, while the three upper levels offer office and meeting space, administration and teaching labs. As construction manager, PCL played a key role in building this state-of-the-art facility that was a catalyst for the transformation in education throughout the health sciences.

SHARP CENTRE FOR DESIGN AT ONTARIO COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN - COOL SCHOOL 

 

The Sharp Centre for Design is a unique table-top structure that has become one of Toronto’s most exciting architectural landmarks. The building houses the university’s design programs, including the faculties of art and liberal arts studies. The PCL team is proud to have constructed this remarkable superstructure, with its striking black-and-white pixelated skin, which stands 85 feet above the ground on 12 multicolored legs. The structure provides two stories of studio and teaching space and connects to an existing facility below by an elevator and staircase that runs through the core.
