DENVER, Colo. (Oct. 23, 2023) – PCL Construction has been recognized on the 2023 Engineering News-Record (ENR) Regional Best Projects lists. Three projects on the ENR Mountain States list and two projects on the ENR California list earn this accolade. 

“We're honored to have our projects recognized in the renovation and restoration, higher education and research, and water and environment categories. These accomplishments reflect PCL’s commitment to delivering outstanding results for our clients and communities,” said Deron Brown, president and chief operating officer for PCL’s U.S. Operations.

An independent jury of industry leaders in design and construction from various regions evaluated the projects on factors such as safety, teamwork, innovation, quality, and contribution to the community or industry. The five regional best projects include:

ENR Mountain States

Judi’s House, JAG Institute is the only community-based nonprofit bereavement center for children and families in the Metro Denver area. This design-build project consisted of a two-story, 26,500 square-foot facility including on-site parking, play, art and group therapy rooms, community education and workforce training spaces and a backyard garden for outdoor therapy and gatherings. PCL served as a community activator to garner financial support for the project and the entire budget was sourced through philanthropic support. PCL, along with project subcontractors, donated 12% of the project costs, allowing Judi’s House to continue offering free grief counseling services to children and families. The project received the Award of Merit in the Higher Education/Research category.

Chasing Rabbits transformed an old theater in the heart of Vail, Colorado, into an elaborate speakeasy with an Alice in Wonderland-inspired theme. This project is the new elevated nightlife and entertainment experience of the Vail valley including a restaurant, library, arcade area, film house and the Moon Rabbit bar space. The project received the Award for Best Project in the Renovation/Restoration category.

Chemical Phosphorous Removal and UV Disinfection Project consists of a chemical removal system and conversion of the existing disinfection system to ultraviolet disinfection at the 20 million gallons-per-day South Platte Water Reclamation Plant in Denver, Colorado. The goal of the project is to produce cleaner water before it is discharged into the South Platte River. The project received the Award for Best Project in the Water/Environment category.

ENR California

UCLA Southwest Campus Apartments is a 591,000 square-foot apartment development for UCLA. The three mid-rise buildings integrate the rich architectural heritage of the neighborhood and house more than 2,600 students in 358 apartments. The development consists of a 7,500 square-foot multipurpose room with a kitchen, common study areas, meeting rooms, mailroom and laundry facilities. The project received the Award of Merit in the Higher Education/Research category.

UCLA Olympic and Centennial Residence Halls included transforming an underutilized parking lot into a LEED Gold-certified mid-rise housing facility for undergraduate students at UCLA. The Olympic and Centennial Residence Halls feature two buildings, totaling 343,000 square feet, ranging from 8 to 10 stories. These buildings provide approximately 1,800 beds, community bathrooms, common study areas, laundry facilities, as well as a basement-level area for housing maintenance storage. The project received the Award for Best Project in the Higher Education/Research category.
