PCL’s Special Projects division was contracted by the City of Phoenix Water Services Department to replace the 100-foot diameter self-supporting steel dome at the 91st Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant in Tolleson, Arizona. Based on the team’s past 10 years of experience working at the treatment plant, including three previous dome replacements, the client knew they were getting a consistently successful product backed by the drive and determination of the team to meet their business goals.
Working in Arizona proves its own set of challenges as heat is a big concern, especially during the summer months. To minimize workers exposing themselves to the heat while working inside the structure, PCL elected to apply 90% of the interior coating with the dome in sections on the ground, assembling them in-place and completing the coating following the welding. This limited the workers exposure to the heat and sun and allowed PCL to ensure their safety was kept top of mind. Residents of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Glendale Tempe and Mesa will continue to benefit from the carbon-neutral renewable energy generated by the treatment plant for years to come.
