Since opening in 2021, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital has been providing the ultimate care through integrated smart technology systems and medical devices that speak directly to one another. Leveraging Internet of Things (IoT), the hospital maximizes information exchange and enables improved patient care in alignment with Mackenzie Health’s Information, Communication and Automation Technology (ICAT) Healthcare strategy.

Located on a 40-acre greenfield site with an additional 10 acres available for future expansion, the 1.2 million-square-foot facility is the first hospital built in the City of Vaughan and is the first net new hospital built in Ontario in more than 30 years.

Running critical work activities in parallel with on-site construction was crucial to maintaining project schedule while reducing site congestion. Our team manufactured 290 modular washrooms pods varying in size from 90 to 100 square feet and weighing approximately 5,000 pounds each. We built 10 variations to ensure ease of installation and integration with the hospital layout.

Modular construction of the pods ensured the health and safety of our employees and enhanced schedule and quality. It also reduced pressures on schedule coordination, workforce loading and quality reviews, allowing for a better end-product, delivered in less time.

At the onset of COVID-19 in Ontario, the hospital became one of the few projects in the province deemed essential by the government, allowing PCL to continue construction throughout mandatory provincial lockdowns. During this time, PCL worked together with the provincial government to develop evolving COVID-19 safe work protocols, including masking protocols, enhanced cleaning, additional washrooms and dedicated directional travel to reduce close contact as well as source material supplies for the project and find solutions to specialized resources required for project commissioning. As a result of the rigor around our planning and protocols, PCL successfully delivered the project without a single COVID-19-related shutdown stemming from outbreaks.

Notably, following the substantial completion in August 2020 during the pandemic and before the scheduled opening in June 2021, Mackenzie Health adjusted their plans to temporarily transition the hospital into a systemwide resource supporting the Province of Ontario’s COVID-19 response. On February 7, 2021, the hospital opened exclusively to support the fight against the pandemic with 514 patients transferred to the facility from hospitals across the GTA.

Embracing energy efficiency and sustainability in the hospital’s planning, design and construction, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital achieved LEED® Silver certification earning 54 points. It features extensive visible green roofs, energy-efficient systems and water conservation measures.

The 350-bed hospital has capacity to expand to 550 beds and is home to a state-of-the-art emergency department, surgical and operating rooms, inpatient and critical care patient rooms and specialized ambulatory clinics. It adds to one of the top performing kidney care programs in the province.
