Since establishing an aviation hub in Denver in 1982, United Airlines has become Denver International Airport’s (DEN) largest airline with over 90 gates and 100,000 square feet of private club space. To keep pace with the airline’s growth, United has commissioned dozens of construction projects at DEN, including a $6 million tenant improvement project to on-site office spaces and Concourse B. During this project, the PCL team completed an interior build-out of offices, employee locker rooms and breakrooms, storage areas and employee restrooms. The project scope also included the installation of dynamic queuing signage, self-service kiosks, information displays, branding and finishes at Concourse B.
The PCL team worked closely with United, adjusting to Owner Furnished/Contractor Installed (OFCI) procurement schedules to ensure design and quality standards were met. The team also had to navigate tight construction site boundaries due to adjacent construction projects and an active airport. As the project progressed, these circumstances led to unplanned changes in mechanical, electrical and infrastructure scopes, necessitating the relocation of walls and unforeseen demolitions. Through a collaborative approach, PCL successfully delivered a multi-faceted project that boosts operational efficiencies for United.
The most significant challenge the PCL team faced was a hot-water pipe break that occurred overnight as the project was nearing completion. This unforeseen event posed a significant threat to the project timeline. The team’s swift response and expertise allowed them to address the issue effectively and immediately identify priority work, ensuring minimal disruption to the overall project timeline.
PCL's success in delivering this tenant improvement project for United was a result of exceptional coordination and collaboration. Working closely within their own project team and with outside construction teams on adjacent projects, the PCL team brought United's vision to life – ensuring operational efficiencies for the airline and providing passengers with a glimpse into the future of air travel.
