When we think of sports, we often think of them as occurring in dedicated spaces: arenas for hockey, gyms for volleyball, fields for baseball and so on. Anschutz Entertainment Group, Inc., had a much bigger vision: to host a variety of different sports in a single venue. PCL was hired to take on the task.
The client’s 120-acre park supports an astounding assortment of sports on the California State University, Dominguez Hills campus in Carson, California. Formerly known as Home Depot Center and then StubHub Center, the venue was renamed Dignity Health Sports Park in January 2019. The facility is an official U.S. training site for the Olympic Games and Dignity Health Sports Park is also home to the Los Angeles Galaxy, a major league soccer team.
The facility boasts an 8,000-seat tennis stadium and a tennis academy. Track and field venues, volleyball courts and softball and baseball fields add even more options to the vast array of sports supported by the park. The sports park encompasses several separate stadiums, each fully equipped to provide an exceptional experience for those participating in or watching their selected sport.
Each stadium has a full complement of private suites, dining facilities, concessions and restrooms, and the central support building houses an impressive number of facilities and support services, including a loading dock and storage facilities, lockers and training rooms, offices for coaches and operations staff, ticketing and security, commissary and food preparation with storage areas, and first aid.
The scope of work also extended to the build-out of the team offices located at the front of the stadium as well as extensive landscaping of the entire site.
Through well-planned coordination and consistent communication with the client, designer and subcontractors, the project was delivered successfully. The Southern California Development Forum awarded PCL the 2004 Grand Prize for the project’s design and positive impact on the community. A rewarding outcome for PCL and for this valued client.
