The James River Bridge Cable Replacement project involved replacing 80 main counterweight ropes and 8 auxiliary counterweight ropes over two, 100-hour allotted periods. To complete this project safely and successfully, the bridge had to be closed to vehicle and marine traffic during construction. Given the critical role of the James River as a bustling shipping channel and the bridge's significance as one of the few vehicular water crossings in the area, adhering to the tight construction schedule was imperative.
The PCL team, HDR Engineering Inc. and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) collaborated closely to devise a plan to minimize traffic disruption. It was determined that splitting the project into two, 100-hour work periods would have the least impact on vehicle and marine traffic. Before construction, PCL and HDR conducted as much auxiliary pre-work as they could to mitigate timing challenges and optimize efficiency. Thorough contingency plans were developed to address potential setbacks, including travel delays, equipment breakdowns and any other unforeseen circumstances.
When construction commenced, the project demanded round-the-clock dedication with the PCL team working 24-hour days during allotted construction periods. Through unwavering dedication, the James River Bridge Cable Replacement team completed the first phase of the project in 88 of the allotted 100 hours and the second phase in 71 of the allotted 100 hours, completing the project in only 159 hours.
By prioritizing meticulous planning, collaboration and proactive risk management, the project not only enhanced the safety and resilience of the bridge but also minimized disruptions to traffic flow. The successful completion of this project stands as a testament to the team’s expertise and determination.
