Preserving a 135-Year Legacy
The historic Old Main building at Mayville State University has been a symbol of education and community for over 135 years. Occupying more than 40% of the campus's operational space, it has served as the heartbeat of student life. However, decades of wear, ranging from flood damage to outdated designs, have necessitated an ambitious revitalization to ensure its enduring legacy for future generations.
Addressing Critical Needs Through Thoughtful Renovation
This renovation focuses on modernizing Old Main while respecting its past. The updates aim to enhance accessibility, safety, and sustainability while improving space usage. Key elements include the preservation of the iconic south façade, the addition of a contemporary north entrance, and the creation of a welcoming central lobby. These changes merge historic charm with modern functionality to meet the demands of today’s students and faculty.
Merging History with Modern Design
Inside Old Main, the renovation highlights its architectural heritage with exposed brick walls and timber trusses, blending seamlessly with innovative features. State-of-the-art classrooms, collaborative study areas, and reimagined lounge spaces will redefine how students and faculty engage. These updates reflect a perfect balance of preserving history while driving forward with modern advancements.
Enhancing Student Experience with a Centralized Hub
The redesign includes a centralized one-stop student services hub on the first floor, streamlining access to essential resources like advising, enrollment, and financial aid. Additionally, the installation of a central elevator makes the building fully accessible, ensuring inclusivity for all members of the campus community.
Spaces Designed for Connection and Growth
From quiet, technology-equipped study rooms to vibrant lounge areas designed for collaboration, the revitalized Old Main will offer spaces where students can connect, learn, and thrive. By fostering community, these dynamic areas aim to support both academic success and personal growth.
Honoring Community Spirit and a Commitment to Education
Old Main’s transformation symbolizes more than just a structural overhaul - it represents the enduring spirit of Mayville State University. For students, faculty, and alumni, this project reinforces a shared commitment to education, community, and innovation. With its new design and purpose, Old Main is set to inspire future generations.
