Era is a multi-family community development in Calgary’s Bridgeland neighborhood, nestled near the downtown core.

Era is one of the largest new builds for Minto Communities in Western Canada, and to bring it to life, PCL was trusted to manage all work from pre-construction to the build’s completion.

The development features two condominium buildings, one 13-story tower with 180 suites and another four-story 40-suite low-rise building. There is also a three-level underground parkade with 189 stalls, amenity and retail spaces on the ground floor, a rooftop amenity level and a central courtyard.

This is PCL’s second project with Minto Communities in Calgary; the first was The Annex development. Following that project’s success, PCL was awarded Era. Pre-construction began in 2019, and construction began in December 2020.

The bond between Minto Communities and PCL was carried through Era’s concept design and construction. Minto needed a lump sum contract, but the design was not complete when the shovels needed to be in the ground.

The solution? Trust.

PCL and Minto Communities agreed to an alternative work pattern—complete the design and tender sequentially under a lump sum contract. This gave the client the cost confidence and schedule they needed.

And this solution paid off. During pre-construction, through several design optimization processes, our value engineering insights resulted in significant cost savings for Minto Communities.
