When you ask those who’ve worked alongside Marlon Garces what sets him apart, they don’t talk about titles or accolades. They talk about presence and a man who shows up — fully, consistently, and without compromise. For the past quarter century, Marlon has poured every ounce of himself into the work of building Hawaii’s future through his leadership and humility at Nordic PCL. As Glen Kaneshige, president of Nordic PCL Construction reflects, “In every cubic yard of concrete poured, every crew led, and every challenge met, you will find his legacy.”
Marlon’s story is one of a quiet but steady ascent driven by unwavering dedication. Joining Nordic Construction in 1999, he began his journey as a project manager on a myriad of jobs. His early projects — Walmart Pearl City, Iolani School Weinberg Classrooms & Kozuki Stadium, and the Whole Barracks Renewal at Schofield — reflect the breadth of his experience and commitment to excellence. When Nordic merged with PCL in 2008, Marlon took on the role of field construction manager, focusing on project logistics and self-performing concrete. By 2009, he had stepped up as operations manager, serving as the crucial link between field crews and executive leadership. Since 2013, he has served as field operations manager, a role in which he continues to orchestrate project success by aligning people, plans and purpose.
But Marlon’s success isn’t defined by job titles or promotions. His colleagues will describe him as the kind of leader who doesn’t just help manage projects and relationships — he lives them. He’s the one walking jobsites at first light, checking in on crews, and ensuring the details are never missed. He remembers your child’s name. He notices when a new apprentice is struggling — and steps in, not to take over, but to support and teach. It’s not uncommon to find a line outside his door — people seeking his guidance, mentorship, and quiet wisdom. As Hawaii District’s field operations manager, Marlon has helped lead Nordic PCL through some of its most ambitious work, including the Hawaii State Federal Credit Union, King Kalakaua Plaza, and the recently completed Halawa View Apartments.
Marlon’s roots in Hawai`i run deep. Born on the island of Moloka`i and a graduate of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, he began his career as a Project Manager at Pacific Construction before joining Nordic Construction. He’s also a promoter of the Tilt-Up Concrete Association in Hawaii’s tilt-up construction market. What makes Marlon’s story remarkable isn’t just the projects he’s built — it’s the way he’s built them through supporting and mentoring our people. He does it with humility, heart, and by immersing himself in the tasks that define excellence in execution.
In an industry that often celebrates speed and scale, Marlon reminds us that true excellence is measured in care, consistency, and character. He doesn’t just build structures—he builds people and teams through trust with humility. It is clear to see his legacy will be the people he mentored rather than the projects he built.
