You know you’re doing a good job when a client comes back to you time and again with new projects. That’s been the case for Derrick Deering, a senior project manager for PCL in North Dakota. His first job for PCL was at the University of North Dakota (UND) in 2014. Except for a few stints at other post-secondary projects and a hospital in the state, he’s been there his entire career.
His status as an alumnus has helped foster a strong partnership with UND, but it’s the mutual understanding and trust developed over time that truly defines the relationship. In Grand Forks, a close-knit and connected community, Deering and his team are committed to being remembered for building with pride and quality.
Deering attributes much of his success to the collaborative spirit within PCL and the dedication of its people. He thrives on solving complex challenges alongside project stakeholders, always focused on delivering value to clients, students, faculty, staff, alumni and the broader North Dakota community. One of his most memorable moments came during the opening of UND’s Nistler College of Business and Public Administration in the fall of 2022, when the excitement and joy on students’ faces underscored the impact of the work.
Deering’s extensive higher education project experience showcases his expertise in delivering value-driven solutions for academic institutions, particularly in North Dakota. A standout achievement includes his work on the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where his team implemented cost-saving strategies to maximize the university’s investment. His portfolio also features key projects such as the Valley City State University McCarthy Hall Renovation, Mayville State University Old Main Renovation, North Dakota State University Seim Hall Remodel and Williston State College Stevens Hall Remodel. These projects highlight his commitment to improving campus facilities across North Dakota. As a proud member of the Society of College and University Planning, Deering remains dedicated to advancing higher education through innovative planning and design.
Beyond project delivery, Deering is committed to sharing knowledge and mentoring others. As a master’s student, he presented at three academic conferences, and in 2016, just two years into his career at PCL, he co-presented at Autodesk University. Looking ahead, his focus remains on building more than just structures; he is dedicated to fostering trust, cultivating relationships, and creating lasting value for clients and communities alike. His approach is grounded in doing the right thing for everyone involved, from the client and project team to the broader community.
