Central Florida Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors recognizes PCL for enhancements to one of the world’s busiest cruise ports
ORLANDO, Fla. (November 1, 2021) – PCL Construction Services, Inc. is pleased to announce it has received an “Eagle Award” from the Central Florida Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (CFC ABC). The award recognizes PCL’s work renovating Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal #8 and is the top honor in the CFC ABC’s “Excellence in Construction” award program. Projects are judged on a variety of factors, including execution of design, quality of craftsmanship, outstanding planning and challenges successfully overcome.
One of the busiest cruise ports in the world, Port Canaveral can accommodate as many as 4.5 million cruise passengers in a single year and maintains relationships with some of the world’s largest and most successful cruise operators, including Disney Cruise Line. In order to continue to accommodate this important client, the Canaveral Port Authority contracted PCL to complete updates to the existing Terminal #8, which exclusively serves Disney Cruise Lines. The terminal modifications improve guest accessibility, security, and flow through an expanded arrivals plaza, arrivals hall, and a new departure ramp. The project was completed in April 2021.
“From the beginning of this project, PCL shared in Port Canaveral’s goal to create an enhanced experience for visitors to Cruise Terminal #8 for years to come,” said Rick Goldman, vice president and district manager for PCL Construction in Orlando. “We were thrilled to work on a project that we know will leave a lasting impact on Port Canaveral, and are tremendously honored to have our work recognized by the CFC ABC.”
“PCL was incredibly agile and professional during the completion of this landmark expansion project for one of our most important partners, Disney Cruise Line, stated William Crowe, VP, Engineering, Construction and Facilities for Port Canaveral. “Their pursuit of quality construction along with rapidly adapting to health and safety challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic was the key to the project’s successful completion.”
The project was awarded to PCL before the COVID-19 pandemic began. The global cruise industry was severely impacted, with cruise line operators from around the world voluntarily suspending travel to ensure the safety of passengers. With the economic impact of the pandemic being uncertain, PCL continued to stay on budget and implemented enhanced safety measures in line with CDC and State of Florida COVID-19 protocols.
PCL’s experience with coastal construction also helped protect the environment throughout the process. All site lighting was approved by the Port Authority, with colors selected that reduce light pollution and fixtures installed closer to the ground. The measures help protect animal species like turtles, who are often drawn toward uncompliant lights.
With millions of travelers eager to return to cruising the open waters from port facilities across the State of Florida, the Canaveral Port Authority relied on PCL’s strength and expertise with port and marine facility construction to improve their facilities and enhance the passenger experience. PCL worked tirelessly to provide exceptional client services through the modifications of Cruise Terminal #8.
